[View Cherry Blossoms at Shofukujiyama Park! (Akitsu, Higashi-Hiroshima)]
Shofukujiyama Park is situated on a small hill, providing a picturesque view of the serene Seto Inland Sea, oyster rafts, and the mountains of Shikoku on clear days. Its nighttime cherry blossoms are illuminated by bonbori [paper lanterns], making the views fantastic and beautiful.
It is ten minutes away from JR Akitsu Station. When you visit, enter through a small gate and pay your respects at Shofukuji Temple before heading to the park!
After walking up a narrow uphill path and stairs for a while, you will be greeted by approximately 1,500 cherry trees.
The park is supported by the local community, and numerous visitors come to see the cherry blossoms every year.
Of course, I also go there every year to see the cherry blossoms.
Please bring a rug or mat and lunch. Eating a meal under the cherry blossoms in full bloom is really enjoyable!
Buy refreshments including drinks and beer from food stalls. Although, they are only on weekends during the cherry blossom viewing season.
See many groups of people, ranging from grandparents to babies and even foreign nationals.
All people seem to really love sitting beneath the cherry trees and seeing timeless Japanese scenery.
This park was established about 70 years ago when local residents planted around 400 saplings.
The restrooms and observatory are also supported by the residents who collaborate with a community association to manage the facilities. Still, due to aging infrastructure, it was decided to close the park for safety reasons after the spring of 2023. Those responsible for running the park are thinking of a new management system for spring 2024.
