【One of Hiroshima’s Three Grand Festivals】 Limited 3-Day Event: The Ebisu-Kou Festival
Recommended for those interested in the culture, history, and traditional festivals of Japan!
The Ebisu-Kou Grand Festival, which has been held continuously for about 400 years, will be held again this year for three days in November at the Ebisu Shrine near the Peace Park. It is one of the three major festivals in Hiroshima, known as the Autumn Grand Festival.
This festival signals the arrival of winter in Hiroshima and is locally referred to as “Ebisu-kou”; Ebisu is believed to be the guardian deity of prosperity in business. In the shopping district near the shrine, a large sale takes place, and people buy “komazarae” (decorative bamboo rakes adorned with large and small coins and treasure ships), which are symbols of good fortune, to pray for business prosperity.
On the night of the 18th (Saturday), Chuo-dori becomes a pedestrian paradise, featuring traditional performances such as Kagura (sacred Shinto music and dance) and taiko drumming. The Sanno Kagura Group from Kitahiroshima-cho, Hiroshima Prefecture, will put on an exciting Kagura performance. An extravagant taiko drumming performance will also be presented.
At Alice Garden, on the 18th (Saturday), there will be a special version of “Alice Garden Performance Square AH!” featuring Ebessan (a famous Japanese pro wrestler), and on the 19th (Sunday), the “2023 HIC (Hiroshima Indie Circuit) THE FINAL STAGE” will be held. Serving as a showcase for Hiroshima’s street scene, these events promise fun contemporary music and performances.
